A call to arms – programmers unite!

It's a fact, in todays digital world, programmers rule the world. I'm a programmer and reasonably sociable but like many of my piers I share autistic traits common to most programmers – defo asperges!

Throughout my carer I have looked to others to take the lead with ideas despite having many of my own! The question is why! Your boss is probably one of those 'Marketing types' – with no knowledge of computers. They have a unique ability to over complicate an idea, with no conception of what it takes to translate that idea into reality. Occasionally they will pose what they think is a complicated thing to implement and be surprised when you inform them how simple it will be – This exemplifies their complete ignorance.

How many times have you seen VC funded dot com ventures literally burning through cash and thought – i could write that in a month! Well, your a programmer, do it. What is it going to cost you? You can do it in the evenings and it will cost you nothing except your time investment, you never know... It might become the next facebook... Also think of the advantages of seeing your own idea through:

  • No design by committee
  • No requests to 'move that button to the right an inch and make it a slightly lighter shade of pink!'
  • No meetings where your opinion 'as the IT guy' is begrudgingly overheard but totally ignored.

  • Some tips if you are thinking of launching a dot com

  • KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid!
  • Buy your domain right away and 'put it in the oven' or better still spend a bit of money and buy an old established domain that will rank well with google quicker.
  • Don't over analyze every decision, be a bit impulsive and go for it!
  • Use 3rd party components / PlugIns - don't reinvent the wheel
  • Invest some time in choosing a development framework

  • Have you ever noticed when at work how little actual time you get to do coding. I'd say that if your lucky 25% of your time is spent coding. Normally this coding effort is misdirected into a futile exploit that is the latest brainchild of your 'marketing type' boss. Think how efficiently you can utilize your time when you only have yourself to answer to. I think you'll be able to build a fully featured data driven web 2.0 site in under 70 hours if you manage your time well.

I develop in asp.net and mysql, I am working on a project at the moment and am 20 hours in! all is going well. Remember – Your a programmer! Your a master of the universe! Don't let your pesky boss push you around.
